How do objects entering the battlefield simultaneously view each other?

Asked by Zehk 6 years ago

For example, Hardened Scales puts additional +1/+1 counters on creatures. If it and a Scrounging Bandar enter simultaneously, does the Hardened Scales see the Bandar? Is there a difference if Winding Constrictor is placing the counters because it too is a creature?

On a similar note, if multiple copies of Avatar of the Resolute enter at the same time and there is at least one conditional counter, do the Avatars see the counters on each other?

For how these things can happen, reference Genesis Wave.

The relevant rule here is 614.12:

614.12. Some replacement effects modify how a permanent enters the battlefield. (See rules 614.1cd.) Such effects may come from the permanent itself if they affect only that permanent (as opposed to a general subset of permanents that includes it). They may also come from other sources. To determine which replacement effects apply and how they apply, check the characteristics of the permanent as it would exist on the battlefield, taking into account replacement effects that have already modified how it enters the battlefield (see rule 616.1), continuous effects from the permanent's own static abilities that would apply to it once it's on the battlefield, and continuous effects that already exist and would apply to the permanent

TL;DR Because Hardened Scales and Winding Constrictor aren't on the battlefield yet when Scrounging Bandar is trying to enter, they cannot effect it. The same is true for multiple Avatar of the Resolutes.

The answer is different for triggered abilities, if one of the creatures is a Garruk's Packleader it will trigger of each creature entering with enough power.
