Helm of the Host and Halvar, God of Battle.

Asked by SwiftDeath 3 years ago

When you go to your combat step does Helm of the Host Trigger even when not equipped to a creature allowing you to use the Halvar, God of Battle  Flip trigger to attach it to a creature and get a token on resolution?

What if Helm is equipping a creature and triggers but you use Halvar's trigger to attach it to a different creature, does it make a token copy of the newly equipped creature or the one previously equipped?

To answer first question: Halvar reads "[...] you may attach target Aura or Equipment _ attached to a creature you control_ to target creature you control."

So any equipments that aren't already equipped when Halvar triggers can't be chosen as targets.

Second question: I'm not 100 percent sure, but Helm should create a token of the creature it's attached to as thevability resolves. Still, depending on how you stack the two triggered abilities, you can choose which creature to copy. As both triggers are yours, you can stack them either way.

If you choose to put Halvar's trigger to resolve first (i.e. put it onto the stack last), Helm creates a token of the newly equipped creature. If you choose to let Helm resolve first, you create a copy of the "old" helm-bearer, then equip it to another creature.

I think this works. There's no intervening "if" clause here (i.e. At the beginning of combat, if Helm is equipped...), which would keep the ability from triggering at all if it wasn't equipped.

In this case, though, Halvar and Helm trigger simultaneously, so you can put the Helm on the stack first and Halvar on top. Halvar resolves first and attaches Helm, then Helm resolves and makes copies.

Polaris didn't seem sure so I just wanted to clarify. Helm of the Host triggers every one of your combats regardless of whether it's equipped or not. Could find no rulings to support this: it's just how MTGO and MTGA do it so I'd assume it's how it's meant to work

Delphen7 I looked for a long time and couldn't find anything supporting it either. It is a weird trigger from the way it is worded so I guess if you had something like Auriok Windwalker you could use it to equip at instant speed. If I could mark two answers as accepted I would mark yours as well but Seshiro corrected me on the Halvar trigger so he gets the mark this time. Thank you all who took the time to comment.

Btw, Helm should work in the way you intend with Ardenn, Intrepid Archaeologist .
