Heir of the Wilds question

Asked by Hanzeru 9 years ago

Can the Ferocious check occur before damage step? For example, I declared Heir of the Wilds as an attacker and my opponent declared no blocks. Before damage step, I flashed in Boon Satyr. How much damage will the Heir deal?

Because Heir of the Wilds reads "Whenever Heir of the Wilds attacks", you must flash in Boon Satyr before the end of the Declare Attackers step. Flashing it in afterwards means the Declare Attackers step is over, and "When x attacks" abilities can not trigger.

You have to have a creature with 4 or more power before the Declare Attackers step begins in order to get the Ferocious bonus from Heir of the Wilds. "Whenever (something) attacks" abilities trigger when that (something) is declared as an attacker. You declare attackers at the very beginning of the Declare Attackers step of combat.

The selected answer by JexInfinite is not correct. The answer Rhadamanthus is correct, but there is one additional thing.

As Rhadamanthus correctly pointed out, a creature with power 4 or greater has to already exist when Heir is declared an attacker for the Ferocious ability to trigger because being declared an attacker is when it would trigger and not any time after.

Also, ferocious will check again when it goes to resolve since it has an "intervening if clause" to make sure the condition is still true, and if it is not the Heir will not be buffed. So if your Boon Satyr is the only creature with power 4 or greater that you have on the battlefield, and with the Ferocious trigger on the stack your opponent kills it or bounces it then the buff will not apply.
