Excactly when does a player die?

Asked by hyena69 8 years ago

Let us say I attack with a bunch of creatures, more than enough to slay my opponent (no first strike). Let us then say that among the defending creatures reciving lethal damage during combat was a Bogardan Firefiend. Will it's "dies" effect have time to trigger before it's controller dies?

How about No Mercy does this trigger before an opponent dies? Let us say that our brave merciless opponent was killed by a measly Chimney Imp. Would the imp live to tell the tale?

Thanks!

Creatures all deal combat damage simultaneously (assuming neither first nor double strike is involved). This means they deal damage to one another and to the defending player as appropriate. Immediately after damage is dealt, state-based actions are checked and any players that have been dealt lethal damage lose the game and any creatures that have been dealt lethal damage are destroyed.

Bogardan Firefiend will die at the same time as its controller. Its ability won't matter because it will cease to exist when its controller loses the game.

No Mercy's ability will trigger, but its controller will lose the game as a state-based action before the ability is put onto the stack. The ability will cease to exist and will not matter.
