Emrakul, the Promised End vs. Kuldotha Forgemaster/Witchbane Orb

Asked by MilliNox 7 years ago

Hello,

I'm thinking about the following situation:

  • One of my opponents (EDH) casts Emrakul, the Promised End.
  • Her cast-trigger goes on the stack targeting me, while my opponent finishes casting Emrakul (paying her mana cost) to put her on the stack as well.
  • Both (cast-trigger + creature spell) wait to resolve while priority is passed around.
  • As soon as I get priority I activate Kuldotha Forgemaster by tapping him and saccing 3 artifacts, so that his ability is the last thing on the stack.
  • Assuming that nobody else has any effects, the ability of Kuldotha Forgemaster would resolve first, I would search my library for Witchbane Orb, put it onto the battlefield and shuffle my library afterwards.
  • Right after that, Emrakul, the Promised End and her cast-trigger are going to resolve; Emrakul is entering the battlefield, but the cast-trigger has now an illegal target, since Witchbane Orb is giving me hexproof.

Is my description/summary correct or am I wrong?

Thx a lot in advance!

Cheers,MilliNox

You're mostly correct, you just have a couple details missing at the end and have things mixed up.

Giving yourself Hexproof before the ability resolves will make yourself an illegal target, and as a result the ability is countered by the game rules. Once that's done, Emrakul will enter the battlefield and the game will proceed as normal.

A spell also isn't considered "cast" until the spell is on the stack, meaning that Emrakul's ability will resolve before she does.

Just for clarity, it should be mentioned that a spell is placed onto the stack as one of the first actions during the casting process, and that any abilities that trigger during the casting process are held until the casting process is complete. At that point, all abilities are placed onto the stack in APNAP (active player, next active player) order. The abilities will therefore be on the stack above the spell that triggered them.

Objects on the stack are not "paired" in any way. The abilities exist and resolve independently of the spell that triggered them. The ability resolves first. Then, after a round of priority, the spell itself resolves.
