Does Sundial work with Seht's Tiger to give permanent protection?

Asked by Goupe 2 years ago

Sundial of the Infinite can be used (like Tale's End) to prevent delayed triggers, by waiting until they go on the stack and then countering them.

Does this also work with preventing "until end of turn" effects from ending? For example, could you use Seht's Tiger with Sundial to gain protection indefinitely?

I've seen people online arguing both for and against this interaction working, so I'd appreciate an explanation of why it does or doesn't work.

Since Seht's Tiger doesn't create a delayed trigger, there's nothing to "counter" (do remember that the spells/abilities are exiled, not actually countered). You will have protection for another turn, but as soon as the next "end of turn" comes around, the criteria for the Tiger's ability to shut off is met--and it will do so.

There's no interaction here. There's no delayed trigger involved; the protection just ends once you get to the cleanup step (after the end step - it's when damage wears off and "until end of turn" effects end). Sundial of the Infinite exiles everything on the stack and skips to the cleanup step, so regardless of when you use Sundial, Seht's Tiger's protection will expire immediately after Sundial's ability resolves.

"Until end of turn" just specifies a duration. A trigger will instruct you to take an action at that time. The kinds of effects ending the turn gets around are things that explicitly set up triggers, like Glorious End or Seance. These cards set up delayed triggers for a specific end step (not just "the end step," which will trigger every turn), and you can Sundial in response to the triggers to skip them permanently.

Just to double up on what Polaris said since there is a discrepancy between the two answers so far, there is no interaction at all between Sundial and "until end of turn" effects. Sundial skips directly to the clean-up step of the current turn, and effects with the duration "until end of turn" end at this point, not during the end step.
