Does Nissa, Vital Force roll up count toward Oketra's Monument for tokens?

Asked by beast_of_war 6 years ago

I have Nissa, Vital Force out and also 2 Oketra's Monuments out. When I roll up Nissa for the land/ creature,

1) does this count towards getting a token from Oketra's Monument?

2) does it also count (until the end of that turn of course) toward Majestic Myriarch's power / toughness?

For question 1: No it does not; you are not "casting" anything, just making the land a creature

For question 2: Yes it does; but like you said, it is only until your next turn

1) No. Planeswalker loyalty abilities are activated abilities. Effects that trigger off of casting spells won't also trigger off of activated abilities. Also, turning a permanent into a creature and casting a creature spell are different actions anyway.

2) Yes. Majestic Myriarch's P/T is decided by a static ability that is always on. It will count the land creature towards the total count until the land stops being a creature.

Thanks to both of you. I thought that was the way it worked but I wanted to make sure. Also, whenHanweir Militia Captain  Flipis flipped and puts out a token, does that token trigger Oketra's Monument to create another or is that the same thing as above, where you're not actually casting a creature rather it being a triggered ability?

A flipped Hanweir Militia Captain  Flip does indeed have a triggered ability. Triggered abilities are also not the same as casting spells. Here is a description from the rules:

"To cast a spell is to take a card from where it is (usually the hand), put it on the stack, and pay its costs, so that it will eventually resolve and have its effect."

Notice how activated and triggered abilities don't involve placing a card (or copy of a card) on the stack, just the ability.
