Djinn Illuminatus + Mizzix of the Izmagnus

Asked by kanofudo 8 years ago

I feel pretty sure about this but I would prefer a more professional ruling before I go spending several turns setting up an insane combo that will never work.

Djinn Illuminatus gives your instants and sorceries replicate

Mizzix of the Izmagnus makes your spells cheaper.

My thinking is that with the way replicate is worded the replicate cost will be the full mana cost of the spell and not the reduced version that mizzix creates. Someone please tell me I'm wrong.

the replicate cost is not reduced by things that reduce sorceries and instants.

Djinn Illuminatus grants your instant and sorcery spells replicate, which is an additional cost. Mizzix of the Izmagnus 's second ability creates a cost reduction effect.

When you calculate the total cost of a spell, you use a formula:
[cost] = [mana cost OR alternate cost] + [additional costs and cost increases] - [cost reductions]

In this case, your instants and sorceries will have this cost:
[cost] = [mana cost OR alternate cost] + N[mana cost] - E
where N is the number of times you replicate and E is the number of experience counters you have.

@pskinn01: That's technically accurate, but I feel I should clarify just to be sure. Replicate is factored into the spell's total cost, and the total cost is reduced appropriately. It's correct to say, however, that the cost reduction does not apply more than once, regardless of how many times the spell is replicated. When you replicate a spell, you aren't casting an additional copy. You're copying a spell, which means the copy is created on the stack.

Additionally, cost reductions don't change the mana cost of a spell. Nothing changes a card's mana cost or converted mana cost (except declaring a value for X if is part of that mana cost). Therefore, the replicate cost is still equal to the value printed in the card's upper right corner.

So to clarify, if I play a 3UR spell replicating twice with Djinn Illuminatis and I happen to have 9 experience counters and Mizzix of Izmagnus on the field, the spell should cost UUURRR?
