Demonic Consultation Combo

Asked by Mtg_Mega_Nerds 3 years ago

Hello! I have recently come up with a combo in edh after watching the Commander's Quarters video on how to loose turn 1. Assume it is turn two and you have a Swamp and Mountain in play. Tap the Swamp to cast Dark Ritual , and use one of the three black mana in your mana pool to cast Demonic Consultation and choose a card that is not in your opponent's library. Then tap the Mountain and cast Deflecting Swat (using the two other mana from the Dark Ritual). Change the target of the Demonic Consultation to your opponent and their entire deck gets exiled. Does this combo work?

Demonic Consultation doesn't target, so you can't change the target to your opponent. On top of that, even if it did target a player, you're talking about interupting an ability part way through its resolution, since naming the card is part of the spell's effect, not cost.

So short answer, no, it doesn't work.

there is plenty of ways to t1 loose in rakdos
just drop any pay life into ability, there is no need for 3 card combos
Dark Ritual + Necropotence
Sol Ring + Immolating Souleater

Ramble Actually that can make you lose lots of life, but magic actually has a rule against paying life if it would put you below 1 life :)

119.4. If a cost or effect allows a player to pay an amount of life greater than 0, the player may do so only if their life total is greater than or equal to the amount of the payment. If a player pays life, the payment is subtracted from their life total; in other words, the player loses that much life.

RambIe: i mean, if YOU are trying to lose turn one then just cast Demonic Consultation and name a card not in your deck. But the point of the questions was to make somebody else lose turn one.

@ Delphen7 you can pay up to 0 which is enough to loose
@ enpc Swamp , Dark Ritual , Immolating Souleater , Tainted Strike , Simian Spirit Guide , Expedite
but good luck getting that in your opening hand, turns 2 and 3 are much easier in rakdos

RambIe: Yes, with Tainted Pact you are losing on your next draw step so it's "technically" not a turn one loss. But for all intents and purposes, it's close enough.

Also just as a heads up, if you want to talk about turn one methods of taking out a player, you should be creating a new thread for it. We shouldn't be treating the Q&A section into a general chat. Not only does it bog down each question with a bunch of un-necessary banter, but most users don't browse the Q&A section so a lot of the conversation doesn't get seen by the majority of website frequenters.

RambIe, enpc: The point of the question was whether or not Demonic Consultation interacts with target-changing effects in a way that allows for a combo. Please stay on topic in the Q&A section. Side conversations make it more difficult for readers to find the answer to the actual question.

Rhadamanthus this thread was moved and i was not notified. It was started in a general topic and all my posts here was in belief that the topic was still in general.
Next time you all decide tomove a thread just posting that the thread was moved would be enough to prevent these issues.
In the mean time i have unsubscribed this topic, and wont get notifications unless i am called out like you just did...
