Crypt Cobra Complete ruling please
Asked by Wolf_Lightning 9 years ago
If Crypt Cobra attacks and is not blocked, defending player gets a poison counter. Okay that is good, bit it is still a 3/3, so the opponent also takes 3 normal damage too, correct? I've looked everywhere for this answer.

Crypt Cobra's current Oracle text is:
Whenever Crypt Cobra attacks and isn't blocked, defending player gets a poison counter. (A player with ten or more poison counters loses the game.)
This wording makes it clear that the ability is a triggered ability. As Crypt Cobra's Gatherer rulings explain, the ability triggers in the declare blockers step. It has no relation to combat damage.

You have the perfectly correct interpretation in the question. If it were a replacement for the regular damage, it would say "instead" somewhere in there.
