Countering Enchantments

Asked by Sinisterkid 8 years ago

Can you counter an effect that is triggered by an Enchantment like Flameshadow Conjuring when Flameshadow Conjuring is already on the board?

There are cards that counter triggered abilities such as Stifle, Trickbind, or Voidslime.

Note: activated abilities read "cost:effect" whereas triggered abilities usually start with: whenever, if, or when. So, cards like Squelch, Interdict, and Voidmage Husher would not help in this case.

First, spells and abilities are different things. You don't counter a spell to counter an ability of that spell (for example, countering Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger would not counter its ability). Flameshadow Conjuring's ability only triggers while Flameshadow Conjuring is a permanent, so you can't counter Flameshadow Conjuring at that point (and, as previously mentioned, it wouldn't do anything for you anyway).

In order to counter the ability, you need to use an effect that explicitly allows you to counter an ability. Cancel, for example, is useless here because it targets only spells. Voidslime, on the other hand, would allow you to counter the ability itself. You can also exile the ability, typically by ending the turn with an effect like that of Time Stop. Destroying or otherwise removing Flameshadow Conjuring will not counter its ability.
