Copying Volo

Asked by Jschultz217 2 years ago

In a game of commander, if I were to use Spark Double on Volo, Guide to Monsters, when I play my next new type of creature would I get multiple copies of that creature from having multiple copies of Volo, Guide to Monsters? Or does the first trigger resolve, and now cause a creature of that type to be on the battlefield, not allowing the others to resolve?

Let's say you have two Volos. You cast a Grizzly Bears, with no other bears in play. Since the event that triggers your commander's ability occurs, both Volos trigger simultaneously--but you get to choose how to put them on the stack. Either way, once the first has resolved the second is already on the stack, and doesn't cease to resolve itself.

If Volo's ability read "whenever you cast a creature spell, create a token that's a copy of target creature you control that shares no creature types with other permanents you control", and you targeted the same creature with both triggers, then the second wouldn't work-because the target would no longer be valid for the terms set in the hypothetical ability.
