Copying Chaos Warp on Precursor Golem

Asked by SmokeyBear15 8 years ago

I had a Precursor Golem out on the field, along with his two golem tokens. I also have a Strionic Resonator. I cast Chaos Warp on the golem, and active Strionic Resonator, copying Precursor Golem's triggered ability.

I think what happens is that the the first ability goes on the stack, and then the second goes on the stack. So I'd have one copy of Chaos Warp targeting the Precursor Golem, and then two copies targeting each of the tokens.

The tokens' copies would resovle, shuffling them away. Easy.

But then what happens when the first set of Chaos Warps try to resolve? They had valid targets when they went on the stack, but now those targets are gone. Would Chaos Warp "try to do as much as possible" (which would not include shuffling anything into library), and then let me reveal the top card of my library?

I'm unsure of how much, if anything, the copies of Chaos Warp do.

Possible outcomes are that I either get to reveal the top 3 cards of my library (and hopefully put them on battlefield), or I get to reveal 5.

If a spell targets (Chaos Warp does) and all targets are illegal (which they are, since the first chaos warps to resolve sent the golems away) then the spell is countered on resolution and none of its effects happen.

Hmm, though the second triggered ability to resolve wouldn't even have a chance to make the Warps, since they don't make the warps till the ability resolves (and so the top one would resolve, making warps. those warps would resolve, and when the bottom ability resolves there's no more golems to make copies for, unless you put more on the field).

Yeah you're right. I just had the brilliant idea to look up the rulings on Chaos Warp:

"If the permanent is an illegal target by the time Chaos Warp tries to resolve, it will be countered and none of its effects will occur. No library will be shuffled and no card will be revealed."
