Conspiracy cards legal in EDH/Commander?

Asked by marz1342 10 years ago

I understand certain cards won't be legal for any format other than Drafting. However there are some new cards that have no "draft" rules in their text, and I'm wondering if those would be legal in EDH decks?

The new "Conspiracy" type claims it begins in the Command Zone, so these are even more 'iffy' to me...

Anyone have a solid answer?

Cards with the Conspiracy type are not legal in EDH (they are banned in vintage, and EDH uses that banned list with some additions). The command zone exists in all games; not only commanders go there. Conspiracies, planes, pheonmena, schemes, vanguard cards, and emblems also go in the commandzone.

All of the cards which do not have the Conspiracy type are legal in EDH.

While all cards from the set with the exception of conspiracies are legal in EDH It would be a bad idea to run some of them since they rely on actions taken during drafting and since there is no draft there can be no actions during the draft. Making Paliano, the High City worse than a basic land for example.

Alright, thank you both for clearing that up for me. So, in other words, even if you're not drafting currently (no shops until I get back home), it could be worth buying a few packs for some extra cards. Again, thank you both!

How about cube?

Cube is a casual draft format, so as long as they are in the packs that are drafted or you set up some other fair way to distribute them then they are legal.

I think if the "conspiracy" cards get added to the list of banned in vintage then they would be banned in EDH. Not all previous "conspiracy" cards are on the banned list--> http://magic.wizards.com/en/game-info/gameplay/formats/vintage

I did not read anywhere that the "conspiracy" cards are not allowed in play, as fact it reads the opposite.

"Cards from expansions and special sets (like From the Vault, Magic: The GatheringCommander, Duel Decks, Conspiracy, etc.) are legal in the Vintage format on the date of release of the expansion or special set."

Also note as Sunday 21 Aug 2016, the only "conspiracy" cards on the banned list are from conspiracy 1; Advantageous ProclamationBackup PlanBrago's FavorDouble StrokeImmediate ActionIterative AnalysisMuzzio's PreparationsPower PlaySecret SummoningSecrets of ParadiseSentinel DispatchUnexpected PotentialWorldknit

So technically until it's updated the new cards will be legal lol ;)

Conspiracy: Take the Crown isn't released yet so they are not legal, once the set releases the new Conspiracies will be on the Vintage banned list. That list of 13 Conspiracies banned in Vintage that you posted is all of the Conspiracies from the original set.

I just don't want anyone getting confused. The card type "Conspiracy" is not usable outside of casual play and draft formats. Cards from the "Conspiracy" sets are legal as long as they do not have the type "Conspiracy" or are not otherwise banned.

The rules Q&A is not a place to be playing word games, people have a hard enough time comprehending the rules without deliberately misleading information.

Maybe WOTC should clarify its rules page. It does not say "conspiracy" card type, its just a card list. As long as that list linked above is updated then those cards will be illegal. Are there any other rules that provide more clarification?

http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=382206

The last gatherer ruling on every card with the type "Conspiracy" reads:

Conspiracies aren't legal for any sanctioned Constructed format, but may be included in other Limited formats, such as Cube Draft.

The Vintage banlist will be updated when the set releases. The style of a banlist does not allow for "All cards with type X" it is simply a list of cards. Right now no cards from Conspiracy: Take the Crown are legal because it is not yet "the date of release of the expansion or special set." I am supremely confident that before the street date of the product that the Vintage banlist will be updated to include the new cards with the type "Conspiracy".
