Cloudshift to avoid Echo costs?

Asked by keyno 9 years ago

Basically, can I use a Cloudshift or similar card to avoid paying an Echo cost?

For example if I cast Bone Shredder and it sits on the field unaffected for a full turn. During my next upkeep, when the card wants an echo cost to be spent to keep it, I choose to "react" with the card Cloudshift, keeping it, and using its enter the battlefield effect again.

The same question for things like Ball Lightning and Cloudshift or Conjurer's Closet

You can avoid paying the echo cost once, but you'll have to pay it next turn. At your next upkeep, the Cloudshifted Bone Shredder will have entered the battlefield after the beginning of your last upkeep, so you'll have to pay the echo cost for it. You will not have to pay the echo cost when you cloudshift it however, so if you just need to delay the cost a turn, this will work (at the cost of a card).

For Ball Lightning, it works similarly, but since it doesn't say "at the beginning of your end step" you will have to sacrifice it at your opponent's end step, unless you can flicker it again.

Thanks, I'm playing quite an ETB deck in commander, so I thought it would be worth knowing that for the ones I run.
