Can you pay for Morph multiple times?

Asked by DreadKhan 3 months ago

I assume it's a solid no because Morph doesn't use the stack, but I thought I'd check if I'm wrong. I'm not sure if it would matter for anything but Gift of Doom, but that would be a much better card if you can (you could sacrifice multiple creatures in response to just about anything), so I'm guessing you can't?

No you won’t be able to. As it doesn’t use the stack its all going to happen instantaneously and there’ll be no window with which to apply the second trigger.

To add some detail: turning something face-up with Morph isn't an activated ability and has different features and restrictions than an activated ability would. It's a special action and paying the cost is part of the process you go through when performing the action. The cost only gets paid in its specific step of the process and can't be done more than once.

702.37e Any time you have priority, you may turn a face-down permanent you control with a morph ability face up. This is a special action; it doesn’t use the stack (see rule 116). To do this, show all players what the permanent’s morph cost would be if it were face up, pay that cost, then turn the permanent face up. (If the permanent wouldn’t have a morph cost if it were face up, it can’t be turned face up this way.) The morph effect on it ends, and it regains its normal characteristics. Any abilities relating to the permanent entering the battlefield don’t trigger when it’s turned face up and don’t have any effect, because the permanent has already entered the battlefield.
