can Mizzium Meddler change the target of those spells?

Asked by ------ 8 years ago

1) You play something. Opponent wants to counter it with Dissolve. Can you now flash in Mizzium Meddler to change the target of Dissolve? I'm a bit confused about the interactions there. I guess it will hit the battlefield, while the rest of the spells is still on the stack, then the change target trigger goes on top of the stack. But what then? Can Mizzium Meddler change the target of a counterspell to itsself even if is already on the battlefield?

2) I cast Lightning Strike targeting my opponent. My opponent now casts Mizzium Meddler to absorb it. But I said "I shoot it at target player" and not "at target creature", so shouldn't it be an invalid target for Mizzium Meddler? I'm not sure about the wording "creature OR player" and how it interacts with this spellskite effects.

any help is welcome.

1: No. Mizzium Meddler's ability can target any spell, but that doesn't mean that it can change the target of any spell. In order to change a target of something, the new object must be a legal target. If it isn't, the target remains unchanged. Because Mizzium Meddler must be on the battlefield in order for its ability to trigger, it won't be a legal target for Dissolve, and Dissolve's target will remain unchanged.

2: Lightning Strike is not modal. It just requires that the target be a [creature or player]. Mizzium Meddler is a creature, so it is a legal target for Lightning Strike.

If instead you cast Barbed Lightning and chosen "Barbed Lightning deals 3 damage to target player" as the mode, then Mizzium Meddler would not be a legal target.

  1. You can change the target of Dissolve to the Meddler. If you do, by the time Dissolve resolves (so after Mizzium Meddler entered the battlefield), it's target will be illegal because it doesn't exist anymore.

  2. Legal targets for Lightning Strike are creatures and players, so as long as they target one of those, it's fine, regardless of what you chose to be a target when you cast it.
