Innistrad: Midnight Hunt and Crimson Vow Speculation/Wishlist

Spoilers, Rumors, and Speculation forum

Posted on July 29, 2021, 9:30 p.m. by DemonDragonJ

There are still several months remaining before the releases of Innistrad: Midnight Hunt and Innistrad: Crimson Vow, but I would like to begin speculating about them, now, to see what the users of this forum are seeking in those sets.

First and foremost, I very dearly wish to see a creature version of Exquisite Blood , since there have now been numerous creatures with the ability of Sanguine Bond , but none with the ability of Exquisite Blood , which is both ridiculous and illogical, because EB’s ability actually makes far more sense on a creature than does SB’s.

Second, I hope to see some excellent new angels and demons, since those are my two favorite types of creatures in this game.

Third, I am neutral toward werewolves, but I know that many players are fond of them, so I would like to see another legendary werewolf, since there currently is only one of those, and I know that players wish to have more options for a werewolf tribal EDH deck.

Fourth, on the subject of transforming cards, there have been a number of creatures with abilities that trigger when they transform, but there have been few, if any, cards with abilities that trigger when other permanents transform; for example, I would like to see permanents with effects such as "whenever a creature transforms, this permanent deals 2 damage to that creature's controller," "whenever a creature transforms, its controller draws a card," or "whenever a creature transforms, return target card from your graveyard to your hand," and so forth.

Fifth, I would like to see any of the following cycles of dual lands be completed: the "horizon lands" (i.e., Horizon Canopy , Silent Clearing , etc.), the "battle lands" (i.e., Canopy Vista , Cinder Glade , etc.), or Nimbus Maze (I know that that is only a single land, but it definitely deserves a full cycle).

Sixth, I feel that these sets would be great sets for reusing the unearth mechanic, since that has not been used in some time.

What does everyone else say about this? What would you like to see from the two upcoming Innistrad sets?

Gavony Dawnguard: not quite the mono-white card advantage engine EDH is holding out for, as you'll need quite alot of cheap creatures to reliably find an egible target evey time. In non-singleton news, it's neat that this can find more copies of itself.

Devoted Grafkeeper: Why are these so wholesome? Look at that pretty gryff ghost!

Kessig Naturalist: Yep, nothing suspicious about someone adopting a wolf pup. Kinda surprised it isn't a Druid or Shaman.

The Celestus: Not bad as far as Manalith variants go. The discard part feels more like a feature than a bug with all the graveyard synergies the set promises. I wonder if we're going to get a Sorcery that changes day/night?

Hi_diddly_ho_neighbor @oldwolves: I think it kinda depends on what amount of day->night cards there'll be, otherwise I don't think it's going to be super noticeable even if other people's spells counting will hurt a bit. Vildin-Pack Alpha is sad that she can't make new friends tho.

Do I properly understand it that Wilhelt, the Rotcleaver and Leinore, Autumn Sovereign are going to be the precon commanders? If so, I'd actually buy the Wilhelt deck from the commander alone, but then again, Leinore is wide open regarding how the precon could be built, so there's definitely potential for interesting cards. Avacyn's Memorial might be boring, but interesting, for sure.

Also, how cute is the artwork of Visions of Dominance?

seshiro_of_the_orochi For Midnight Hunt? Yes, and only those two:

Leinore, Autumn Sovereign box Wilhelt, the Rotcleaver box

Coward_Token: These new precon boxes looks awesome, and I love how they reduced the amount of plastic pieces. Do we know when to expect the lists?

So, Liesa has returned? I wonder how she came back to life, and how Sigarda shall react to that?

Fleshtaker and Diregraf rebirth are both very awesome cards, so I hope that I can find room for them in one of my decks.

Why is sludge monster not an ooze, and why is it blue, when most oozes are black and green?

I like how faithful mending references Faithless Looting, so it also would be nice to see a reference to Ancient Grudge, as well.

Croaking counterpart would make more sense on Eldraine or Lorwyn, but it still is a humorous card that is an interesting twist on Cackling Counterpart.

So new Liesea is basically a more reliable but also more expensive Athreos, God of Passage, with a Leyline of the Void tacked on, possibly referencing Gisela, Blade of Goldnight or even the New Phyrexia Praetors. Shadowborn Apostle comes to mind, possibly intentionally so as lore-wise she's supposed to be about dealing with demons.

September 6, 2021 12:13 a.m.

Liesa is pretty cool. Very similar to Hofri Ghostforge but in more supported colors for it.

September 6, 2021 12:16 a.m.

New Liesa looks pretty powerful. In case your big aristocrat turn ends with multiple creatures dead (...), she'll refull your hand like a boss..

September 6, 2021 12:29 a.m.

It is a shame that Liesa waits until the end step to return the creatures. I would've loved for it to be immediate, but then again, she probably would be too powerful then (cough cough Blood Pet cough cough). I think I'll stick with Hofri Ghostforge for this similar type of reanimator deck. I prefer his immediate effect over the delayed, but more reusable effect that Liesa brings to the table.

We are getting some interesting story spotlight cards. Defend the Celestus makes it sound like the story is centering around The Celestus and some ritual to fix the plane's diurnal cycle being besieged by Tovolar, Dire Overlord  Flip and his werewolf pack. My guess is that the revival of Liesa may also be a by product of this conflict.

Also, I wonder who our third planeswalker card will be. We already have Chandra depicted in Light Up the Night, Teferi depicted in Secrets of the Key and Sorin mentioned in the flavor texts of Secrets of the Key. My hope is for Sorin since we have had more recent iterations of the other two.

September 6, 2021 9:37 a.m.

Coward_Token says... #13

IRC in the initial Twitch stream Teferi was mentioned as appearing in this set (Sorin is all but guarantedly going into the next one)

September 6, 2021 12:26 p.m.

I gotta say, there are some pretty interesting legends spoiled today. Ludevic, Slogurk, Lier, and especially Rem all seem pretty interesting. It's nice to see Simic (Slogurk) get a non-purely value commander option and Rem is very interesting for Boros. Also, I am sure all the eternal format and modern players are rejoicing that Delver of Secrets  Flip is returning.

September 8, 2021 9:39 a.m.

The new Teferi is awesome, and he certainly could be great in some of my decks, but I do not know if I can remove another card to make room for him, and he definitely will draw the ire of all other [players ion the game.

It is nice to finally have a card of Rem Karolus, who has been mentioned in the stories and flavor text, in previous sets, and I also like the new Ludevic, as well.

Sigardian savior is nice, but the fact that it must be cast in order for the ability to trigger is annoying; is WotC really that concerned about players abusing “enters-the-battlefield” abilities?

The fact that there is a Jack-o’-lantern on Innistrad implies that that plane likely has a legend of a man named Jack who tricked a demon or devil, as does our world.

With Kaya being on Innistrad, I wonder; does her magic of banishing spirits affect the natural system of magic on other planes? Does her power have limits? I cannot help but wonder if she is overpowered.

Sacred fire would have been nice if its flashback cost were not so high.

Given that Final Payment is an instant, is there any good reason for which rite of oblivion is a sorcery?

September 8, 2021 6:28 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #16

Given that this set features a mechanic named Coven, has anyone here ever heard of a band named Coven? They were the first band ever to have demonic/Satanic lyrics in their music, even before Black Sabbath, and their sound could best be described as a demonic Jefferson Airplane, in my mind.

September 9, 2021 9:24 p.m.

Looking at Lord of the Forsaken, I can say that Chainer, Nightmare Adept can cast Eldrazi for free now. This seems perfectly fine ;)

Also, is it just me or would Lier, Disciple of the Drowned have caused a massive outrage just like a year or two ago? And now everyone ist just like "yeah, whatever".

seshiro_of_the_orochi: Seeing as it requires a 6-drop, can only be done once per rotation (or four with a flash enabler), and doesn't work with the Shuffeldrazi or Blightsteel Colossus I think it's OK

I made a correct prediction for once :D

September 10, 2021 3:49 p.m.

Super stoked that we are getting an upgraded Anarchist. I will gladly trade 1 point of toughness for a 1 lower casting cost.

I love everything about Jerren, Corrupted Bishop/Ormendahl except the 13 life clause. Just too difficult to pull off and survive in commander. He will probably be a constructed all-star though.

Overall I am both really excited for the set and a little disappointed at the same time. I am happy that a lot of the mechanics seem fun, the set flavor truly feels like Innistrad again and it's nice and creepy, and some unsupported archetypes got commanders (werewolves and curses especially). Yet I am disappointed because none of the new legends really speak to me. Jerren would've been perfect if he was a little more easy to flip. I am intrigued by Wilhelt since he does add an interesting wrinkle to one of my favorite tribes, but idk.

September 11, 2021 1:35 p.m.

Holy crap, the Wilhelt precon is stacked. Almost all of the important zombie tribal cards are in it. And a lot of the new cards are really cool/strong. I don't say this often anymore, but well done WotC.

This set did not contain a reprint, or a creature version, of Exquisite Blood, but I shall maintain hope for such cards to appear in Crimson Vow.

September 15, 2021 8:10 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #23

I also noticed that this set does not contain any new demons, which is very disappointing, since it does contain several new angels.

September 15, 2021 9:56 p.m.

DemonDragonJ - It does, there is Lord of the Forsaken and Dreadhound are demons. Jerren, Corrupted Bishop  Flip flips into Ormendahl, Heirloom Mirror  Flip flips into a demon and so does Ecstatic Awakener  Flip.

Hi_diddly_ho_neighbor, I cannot believe that I forgot about those cards, so I thank you for reminding me about them.

DemonDragonJ: while I expect there to be some more Demons in Crimson Vow, I think they're leaving room for other creature types since Streets of New Capenna will probably have your hellish needs covered

September 17, 2021 4:33 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #27

Also, to continue what I was saying, this set has a new incarnation of Gisa, so I believe that it is safe to presume that the next set shall have a new incarnation of Geralf, since those two have always appeared together, thus far.

September 19, 2021 8:34 a.m.

Gleeock says... #28

DemonDragonJ I also really want some demons... & I know you've seen my take on how this would be a perfect set to introduce Archdevils/high end devils that are beyond just nuisance-level. Coward_Token I may be one of the few people who would be most excited for Streets of New Capenna of all the upcoming sets - reeks of cards with Machiavellian politics stapled all over them... Also maybe a big ole' Jund-Demon

September 19, 2021 11:26 a.m.

Coward_Token says... #29

We're going off topic but I'm mostly hoping _Capenna _keeps Demons in black, or at least avoid green and white ones without black. (Angels could make up the non-black shard/wedge factions.)

September 19, 2021 2 p.m.

legendofa says... #30

Coward_Token I think all the groups/factions/whatever in New Capenna are led by demons. Doesn't mean there won't be angels, just that they're not in charge.

In this article, Mark Rosewater confirms that Odric, Thalia, and Geralf shall appear in Crimsopn Vow, which is very good news, indeed.
