Hi, I am trying to build modern death's shadow on a budget (around $150)! Here is the List! Please give advice to what cards I should add or take out. (Eventually I will upgrade and get the shock/fetches)

Two thoughts:

  • without fetches/shocks its going to be really hard to reliably get your life total down quickly to start getting shadows into play. I think you need to aim for the full playset of Street Wraith to help get you there.

  • 7 playable creatures feels a little too low imo, i think you probably want to aim for 12. Get the 4th DRC, and then find another creature to cram in here.

Thank you for the advice! Will do!

Hey, the Pain lands, Underground River, Shivan Reef and Sulfurous Springs were just reprinted making them budget land options. They ETB untapped and can be another source of making yourself lose life to make mana. They could replace basic lands or add a lot of them for the price of one Otawara, Soaring City.

Plunge into Darkness can be risky, but it's 2 mana to lose as much life as you want while also potentially finding a Shadow. Apostle's Blessing can protect for 1 mana + 2 life.

Without the fetches, shocks and Thoughtseize, you’ll almost never be down to a low enough life total to ever even cast shadow as a 1/1. If you ever play against U/W control (which is already a tough matchup) you would quite literally never get below 13 life, as the ONLY damage you have to yourself is Dismember which has virtually 0 targets against them.

I'll echo other commenters - focus in on lands and staples. A deck with bad spells and good lands usually outperforms a deck with bad lands and good spells.

Arguel's Blood Fast  Flip, Eye of Vecna Dreadhorde Invasion, are all worth playtesting to see if you can support a slower gameplan, cause getting life low without fetch into shock is hard.

I'd go mine death's shadow sideboards for cheap tech for whatever matchups you feel weakest against then run it mainboard. Unholy Heat & Terminate are worth looking at for spots if you can support the mana pips.

I used to run a Mono Black Death’s Shadow deck before Death’s Shadow was a real deck. I’d run spells like Vendetta and Devour in Shadow with creatures like Sangrophage …dunno how viable it is today. It just some ideas

Infernal Grasp is probably the way to go
