Why Did WotC Change Collector's Numbers?

Collector's numbers used to show the total number of cards in a set (i.e., "100/300"), but, now, they do not, which I find to be very annoying, since I like to know the total number of cards in a set, so does anyone here know why WotC changed how collector's numbers work?

Here's a wild guess:

People have repeatedly asked if wotc could reprint unique cards from UB sets or secret lairs (LOTR, Street Fighter and whatnot) with a "reverse Godzilla" treatment, like a reskin with a new name and the old name referenced in much smaller letters underneath the reskin name.

The answer was, they COULD reprint those cards in question, but they could not have the OG name anywhere in the card due to legal issues - those kind of reprints would be IDENTIFIED BY THEIR COLLECTOR'S NUMBER

I have no evidence that those issues are actually related, but that might somehow be connected (or not). Best I got :D

sergiodelrio, I suppose that that makes sense, in a certain way.

I'd say that it has to do with Secret Lairs, but not the whole "Identified by their number" thing. It is more to do with SLD and SLX not having a defined number of cards. They have already printed a good deal of universes within cards and at the bottom it simply says =SLD###. For example Enkira, Hostile Scavenger says =SLD 146 which is Michonne, Ruthless Survivor.

Add to this that special printings have collector's numbers over the number of cards in the set and dropped the "out of" number. Then some cards have multiple arts counted as part of the "set" and other printings that are not in that number but feel like they should be (Plains, Plains, Plains). Just dropping the "out of" number standardizes collector numbers across all products and printings.

Gidgetimer, I am so sorry that I need to ask this, but what do "SLD" and "SLX" stand for? I believe that "SLD" stands for "Secret Lair Drop," but I am not certain what "SLX" stands for.

SLD is the set code for Secret Lairs. I also figure that the "D" is for "drop" but don't know for sure. SLX is Universes Within (the in-universe versions of mechanically unique Universes Beyond cards). I assume it it is "Secret Lair Extra" but I'm not sure.
