Goals as a Brewer

Commander (EDH) forum

Not 100% if this was the correct section

Anyways, why do you post your decks online? Do you just like to share? Are you helping a friend? Perhaps you're cataloging decks or just want to be more involved in the community. There's also that tiny hit of dopamine when someone upvotes or says they like your deck. Do you have higher aspirations when it comes to magic?

Personally, I'd like to make a definitive version of a deck or be the first to pioneer a new archetype. Lantern Control and Amulet titan were so creative - sure it may of been a collaborative effort to some extent but they were so creative and different from all the decks at the time. Also, the cards used in them at least in their first iterations had been around for quite some time.

Self improvement. Someone out there is inevitably going to suggest a card or cards that will be better than what I’ve initially come up with, and that in turn will get my mind thinking more creatively and competitively over time.

The difficult part is accepting enough of the right suggestions without accepting so many that the deck either doesn’t resemble the initial concept in the slightest or else just morphs into a well documented deck, card for card.

I agree with what Balaam__ said. Getting help with tweaking your favorite decks is always good.

On top of that, I love posting commander decks that use less popular commanders. I love the idea that if someone out there wants to make, say, a Rebbec and Glacial partner deck, they could search it on here and mine would pop up. Helping inspire people to use lesser known commanders is probably the main reason why I post decks on here.

When I actually built decks, for Modern, it was just to have fun with new ideas in my group.

When I got into EDH, it was to take underutilized Commanders and make them viable, and eventually semi-competitive.

Now that I lack the time to build or play, I just hover in the threads to answer questions and offer input.

I build online to goldfish, generally. Unfortunately, I've been unsatisfied with the TappedOut playtester recently, and have relocated the frantic idea-spamming that those who got notifs from my deck making on this site came to dread. TappedOut is unparalleled in the social aspect, but Moxfield is just so easy to brew on...

Anyways. I digress and apologize.

If ever I feel I've been particularly clever, or I've spent a ridiculous chunk of time theory-crafting a build, I'll cycle it just to get eyes on it. Upvotes are basically mini dopamine hits, especially if they're for something I've toiled for long and hard.

But yeah. Mainly to goldfish ;)

Balaam__ what spicy tech has improved a brew/deck the most without muddling the initial concept?

KBK7101 Hey I made a pedh deck of them! It is cool to brew up some of the lesser known commanders. A lot of the time the face cards/poster commanders of a set snag all of the attention - I feel there have been several commanders that have been over looked in the past year but they just need that 1 or 2 new toys to get people to look at then again.

TypicalTimmy - I wish I had the time to get back into modern such a fun format! I'm kind of in the same boat. I have more funds now than I did a few years ago but lack time. So, I just come on here and lurk.

Omniscience_is_life - I like both sites but I tend to agree that the interface is much easier to use. Though I will say that the people who know how to do that CSS stuff have made some cool pages/lists. It feels like Myspace for magic decks. Whereas moxfield feels like Facebook.

@RNR_Gaming sometimes a user will recommend a card I haven’t seen before, and it’ll be the perfect fit and supersede what I originally had. Other times it’ll be a fairly obvious replacement I should have thought of myself, but didn’t. Either way the deck is improved and I managed to learn something for next build. Invaluable community, this.

I love showing my hyper-themed decks off to people, and this was an additional venue. It makes me happier than I’d like to admit when I show people a card they hadn’t seen before, or make them think about a card that they haven’t really thought about (did you ever really THINK about what happens when you cast Encrust on something?). Secondarily, I enjoy watching the discussions and chiming in when I (rarely) have a relevant comment. It’s one of (maybe even half of?) the few places on the internet that I frequent, and I’m very grateful to everyone who has made me feel so welcome. Looking forward to another however many years!

I register my decklists to the site when I've had a few particularly enjoyable sessions with it. I regularly keep tweaking my decks, and at some point I realize I've overdone it, that's when I have an image saved up here from when I was sure to have fun with that iteration.

I barely use the site to brew, I prefer laying them out before me in paper (I don't play online magic). I don't think I have cycled many of my decks, it's more of a binder with personal decklists to me.

At some point I got bored and browsed the forums, and I like conversation about M:tG enough that I got sucked into them. I've never started my own thread, but I love to share insights.

So yeah, a decklist binder with enjoyable conservations, I don't frequent this site to better myself in Magic aspects, even though it might accidentally happen anyway.

I have an account on Moxfield with three decks there in a private collection. Honestly, the play test feature really bothers me. I dislike the yellow-blue highlighting and clicking nonsense. Some of the hotkeys don't feel natural. Otherwise it seems identical to Tappedout's.

I dislike the inability to make custom categories with deck lists, such as;

# Stompy
# Burn
# Wincon1

I also dislike how the community there doesn't feel nearly as engaging.

In summary, Moxfield sort of feels more like what you'd expect in a work environment - you do your job and keep quiet. While Tappedout feels more like a college environment - everybody loves to socialize and have fun.

I'm not big on social media. I have a Facebook I keep getting Zuckerbanned off of because I post spicy content, and I have Snapchat that I don't use anymore. Nothing else. To me, Tappedout feels a bit like a social media platform, not unlike a Reddit forum. It's nice to see people engaged and talking, even if it appears to be the same dozen or so people lately. Seems like it's always the same voices in any given thread, though maybe that's just my own confirmation bias.

Regardless, I prefer Tappedout.

According to tappedout I've Finished Decks 147, and I have 97 Prototype Decks.

On paper I have I think 12-14 deck. Not all of them are edh. Building and brewing ideas on tappedout for me is a way for me to get the satisfaction of Building decks at no cost. No money needed to build a deck on tappedout. I can share my creations with my friends here or on a group chat or Discord. Heck I can even bring it up on the computer at my local lgs to show the shop owners. I use it as a way to purchase cards from them or I can order the whole thing 9n tcgplayer.com.

So for me it's about saving money and satisfying my need ro build decks. I never have the time to get together with ny friends and play a game of magic. Tappedout give my some satisfaction.

When I share the decks here on tappedout it's because of 1 or 2 things. I'm looking for input and I'm looking to share my unique deck idea. When it comes to posting on message boards like this one, it's a totally unique feeling kinda like hanging out at the lgs and discussing magic things. Except here on tappedout it'd better. I love the community on tappedout. Just a bunch of nicest people who play magic all in one place.

In my case it's a little bit of everything of what you said. I love the ideia of researching cards and pondering the kinds of decks that can exist and how those decks can vary depending on the format. I also like when people suggest things even if I don't plan on using because it gives me food for thought and I may end up changing my mind. I cannot deny I enjoy the feeling of seeing the upvote numbers go up and seeing "achieved number whatever in a specific hub". However, my main goal is to build and share decks to show people you can have fun with MTG without spending a lot while also having a deck that isn't just draft chaff piled up togheter.

Sorry if it what I said seems to be kinda rambly. Deckbuilding is something very interesting and posting it online has a lot of meaning to me so it's a bit hard for me to put it into words.

Honestly, I'm pretty new here and I don't have a ton of experience with the mtg online community, but I do like tappedout so far. Everyone has been really nice and it seems like a place where people actually want to help you with your decks rather than say, hey, you're doing it wrong.

Magic has always been one of those things that helps to keep the old noggin active. I have a very physical job and it really helps me to have hobbies that are ways to throw some brain power at things for a change :) So, I really enjoy deckbuilding and trying my best to take cards that I really like and make them work. If I can take something that is first awesome, second not the most popular thing in the world, and third has an interesting playstyle to it, and somehow orchestrate a way for it all to work, then I'm in smile city.

And, tappedout seems like a really nice place to chat and talk decks and builds. I've tried magic online before and just never got too into it. There was no "hanging out with friends and playing games" feel to it, you know? And that's a big part of what I love about magic. It's always hard to get people together and get paper games, but I still really prefer that odd time it happens to a hundred magic online games.

Long story short, I don't feel any aspirations in deck building really. Just, when everything comes together and I get an idea for a deck that seems like fun, then the only thing that I can really do is brew. And then it's nice to have a spot to post it and maybe get some opinions and get some ideas that I'd never thought of :)

-Lurking mostly.

-Forming sort of sub-community bonds over less competitive strategies or less common commanders. For e.g. there is a fairly close-knit sub-community on here that follows Thantis, the Warweaver builds.

-Discussion of gameplay experience with brews (practical applications versus theory-crafting). I don't have as much time to play as I used too, but I have a deep well of experience with specific decks that I have had for awhile now. Experience with specific cards that aren't exactly staples, where I can offer or hopefully receive advice based on gameplay, as to what non-staples swung above their weight or what non-staples would be good for removal. I focus on non-staples, because you can find dime-a-dozen information anywhere for dime-a-dozen cards.

December 12, 2021 2:59 p.m.

I do it to goldfish, but I also like to learn about other formats and see other peoples hot brews. Reading a primer on a new deck is one of my favorite ways to stay engaged in magic while not playing.

I honestly mostly use this as a place to keep my decklists even after I dismantle a deck, organize them in different ways to visualize what cards to remove for new additions (sorting by CMC and custom categories are my favorite), and easy access to decklists while traveling.

The community and suggestions are a nice bonus! Plus I do enjoy interacting with other players and sharing ideas.

Theorycrafting. Can I make this synergy work? That deck is a couple of turns too slow, what's the best way to speed it up? Will Standard discard ever exist again?

Easily three quarters of my decklists on here are me spitballing, brainstorming, and generally messing around.
