Fun Commander/Archetype recommendation

Commander (EDH) forum

Hi all,

I am planning to build a new deck soon and can not decide on a fun archetype.

Here is what i have. I only play 5c because i just love the flexability and already have a close to perfect manabase for it that i switch between decks.

I have 3 decks at the moment. -Sliver tribal -Sliver queen token/enchantress (no combos) -Codie spellslinger

I am now looking for something different.

Sliver is basicly beatdown, Queen is a durdly value machine like most enchantresses. and Codie is well, Codie. Very much value and wins by stuff like mizzix mastery or Rite of replication.

Thats my situation. Maybe someone can recommend me a cool 5c idea thats unique and fun.

Thanks

Ok, so my favorite 5 color is Kenrith, Returned King + Zirda, the Dawnwaker, focusing on cycling! It's a lot of fun and reasonably powerful. Mostly value. I got the idea from Commander's Quarters and made some adjustments on my own: Kenrith Returns with Zirda by His Side. I also run Jodah, Archmage Eternal as a "play big spells cheap" commander: Jodah's Big Buddies - on a Budget $70. Horde of Notions Reanimator seems fun, although I haven't built it. I run Rienne, Angel of Rebirth as a multi-colors matter commander, but you could definitely find a different commander and focus on that.

I think Reaper King 5 color scarecrows with clones lots of clones would be cool. Or Spirits tribal with O-Kagachi, Vengeful Kami as the cmdr would be cool.

Both are high on my list. I like reaper king more from his design but kami looks more interesting.

I wish there was something like Lazav, Dimir Mastermind or Skullbriar, the Walking Grave in 5 colors. I think something voltron control would also fit my taste and is different enough from my other decks.

Maybe the Kami could fit that role too.

I know the statistics but i am a bit overwhelmed by them so i asked for your personal suggestions.

Powerlevel of my playgroup is all over the place so i would go for 6 to 7.

Kenrith, Returned King as a politics deck would be an option too. And maybe wouldnt draw as much hate as i could play it a bit more friendly.

I would have some really nice targets from Jodah, Archmage Eternal like all Eldrazi Titans and some other mean stuff. But my Playgroup would probably hate that too much.

For now i think i would consider

Kenrith, Returned King politics, O-Kagachi, Vengeful Kami voltron, Reaper King Scarecrows/halloween themed control deck

If you like the idea of a 5 c voltron/control commander. Check out Sisay, Weatherlight Captain. She can be an awesome voltron commander that gets pumped with other legendary creatures being on the field. Utilize a variety of equipment to fulfill the voltron requirement.

As for the control aspect, being all five colors gives you multiple options, but it is her activated ability which shines. Want to lock out some high cmc non-creature spells? Grab Gaddock Teeg. Need to stop a token swarm? Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite. Slow down some aggressive decks? Thalia, Heretic Cathar. Need an extra combat? Aurelia, the Warleader. Sisay is a tool box commander that excels with voltron and has the ability to utilize some busted combos when it’s time to end the game. It’s a fun deck that can play as linear or erratic as you want. Super fun commander and one that I highly recommend. Plus it’s a way to utilize all those legendary cards sitting in a binder with no home!

If you’ve got all five colors to work with you can TOTALLY make a garbage theme deck like I do! Pick a theme, like a movie type or geographic region type or letter of the alphabet and then do some Gatherer searches! Check out my decks to see what I’m talking about, the wubrg natural disaster deck is a blast. I’m currently working on an antique store theme; anyone in the market for an Iron Star?

Ok thanks for your suggestions.

Sisay is cool but i actually hate everything thats searching my deck in edh. Only exception are fetchlands as they are too good to pass.

Reaper king really caught my attention as i love his artwork.

I usually build pretty spikey but i might try to go with a janky halloween / horror theme.

Or maybe clones/control with voltron elements using clones to copy my enemys stuff or target reaper king to use them as removal.

If someone has an idea to push me in a good direction it would be much appreciated.

Reaper King is so much fun to build around

I actually put together an Atraxa, Praetors' Voice phyrexian themed -1-1 proliferate deck (only digital for brainstorming) and now going to think about Reaper King more.

Then i will decide what to buy in paper. Scarecrow tribal and changelings look pretty uninteresting tho. Most changelings have no real flavour. And scarecrows are mostly bad.

Reaper King voltron with many scythes would be cool too but doesnt use his ability at all.

Reaper King is such a cool card with a really awesome Artwork and flavour. I wish i had a fun viable way to build it right now.

Atraxa, Praetors' Voice is a bit overused (and no 5c unfortunately)but a -1-1 theme with loads of proliferate feels like a really cool way to play.

Any opinions?

Here's a few Janky Ideas from the Jankyard Dog ;).

Redless Dragons: I would accept one of the 5c dragon commanders as the only red inclusive card for this. Otherwise its Atraxa or a partner pairing.

Atraxa Snow: you can name it 'Phyrexian Snow Angel' XD. I believe there are enough snow cards that produce counters to make her ability relevant for the theme.

A jeskai deck in which the only creatures aside from your commander of choice are created by spells. A few creatures that react to Noncreature spells creating tokens is probably fine.

'...power equal to X...' theme. Thinking....Sultai? Card in hand and/or GY, stuff like that.

Maybe that will provide some inspiration.

I like how you think JANKYARD_DOG . WUBRG popular stuff is a dime a dozen, but WUBRG with those bizarre limitations seems like a good time :) ... Besides WUBRG monarch/forced combat, I think another cool jank-theme would be WUBRG polymorph with bunches of token-producing spells & ways to polymorph into stuff you'd otherwise never play. It would be a bit like Atla Palani, Nest Tender though. You'd have to avoid the temptation to just make it into combo/lockdown unless that is what you wanted.

Ramos, Dragon Engine can be a really fun voltron commander. With Blade of the Bloodchief it grows at a crazy pace by casting small creatures for value and doing sacs. Scarecrone Junk Diver and Myr Retriever work really well here, and in 5c there are a lot of options to tutor equipments to get on Ramos.

And, having the dragon be a big flying beater is pretty good, but it really shines when you have some mana dumps. If you get a 14/14 Ramos, and have a sink to throw that mana into when he inevitably gets removed, you can get you some serious value on the way out. Or you could use something like Omnath, Locus of Mana to save mana. Also, if you run Ramos as equipment heavy voltron strategy, being able to equip at instant speed with something like Leonin Shikari is useful to use the mana when Ramos dies to equip your other creatures.

Just a thought ;) I do love the big mecha-dragon.

I decided on a Kenrith, the Returned King political shenanigans deck. I know Kenrith is very popular at the moment but he seems to be the perfect fit for this. I might give it a noble flavour of some sort.

No combos, no broken stuff. I will try to come up with something thats pure politics and shenanigans. Redirecting spells, buffing the right players striking deals. And in the end hardcastibg some Eldrazi if games are going too long.

I used to play Zedruu the Greathearted in a similar fashion a few years ago. And it was hilarious for everyone and i think politics will never get old for me.

My vote would be esika God tribal. If I had the money for a good 5color Mana base that's what I would run
