First edh deck

Hey

I'm not sure if this post should be on the deck help or not so sorry in advance if it's not in the right section.

After watching a few episodes of gameknights I decided to try edh and pick up a preconstructed deck online but there's so many available that I have no idea which ones to pick (I'm thinking about picking up two of them then maybe after I'll build up something on my own after a few months of playing).

These are the one's I found available on the website of the lgs near me.

Evasive Maneuver

Mind Seize

Adaptive Enchantment

Subjective Reality

Mystic Intellect

Faceless Menace

Timeless Wisdom

Symbiotic Swarm

Ruthless Regiment

Enhanced Evolution

Arcane Maelstrom

Aura of Courage

Dragonic Rage

Dungeons of Death

Planar Portal

Reap the Tide

Eleven Empire

Lorehold Legacies

Prismari Performance

Quantum Quandrix

Silverquill Statement

Witherbloom Witchcraft

If a few people could give me their top 3-5 decks and why they picked it up it would really help me make a decision.

Thanks.

I strongly recommend checking out Commander's Quarters on YouTube and ordering the cards to make a deck that suits your playstyle and budget.

What formats do you currently play, and what decks do you like in those formats?

This should help some folks be more inclined to help you. I for one have no idea what the name of most of the decks are, it is just the commander(s) that I care about. What I would highly recommend is if you know your general preferred play style let us know and we can start pointing you in one direction or another.

My first edh deck was basically a mishmash of a bunch of my favorite current existing cards, so I would recommend thrashing around inefficiently for a while, feeling out what you like to do. Having said that, this method involves losing a lot...which isn’t always a ton of fun, so you may be better off picking up a premade (like, any of them really) and start there. Better to jump in the pool than dilly-dally ;p (disclaimer: your mileage may vary)

Follow up to my previous comment Prosper, Tome-Bound and Aesi, Tyrant of Gyre Strait stand out a bit to me. These two will help out with getting mana and drawing cards. You need card draw and mana to play the game. These will always just be generically good along with any other commander that does one or both of those things.

DrukenReaps I appreciate the help with the commanders name next to the deck but other than the basic edh rules I've never llayed before and I'm not looking to be pushed in a direction in particular I'm just looking to know what people enjoyed more or less out of the box in the list I gave and why so I could pick up one or two of them.

Draconic Rage, Symbiotic Swarm, and Subjective Reality are my picks.

Each of these decks also have good alternate commanders, so you get lots of decent options.

What kind of decks do you like to play? That would help with picking the right one.

InfernalTusker then I would actually recommend playing some 60 card magic but if you'd like to skip over that these are my suggestions. Just to narrow things down a bit-

Dungeons of Death Sefris of the Hidden Ways

Planar Portal Prosper, Tome-Bound

Reap the Tide Aesi, Tyrant of Gyre Strait

Eleven Empire Lathril, Blade of the Elves

Each of these is relatively recent so the price gouging should be minimal. Each of them is also set up to give consistent value over the course of a game without being too crazy weird. Of them Sefris is the only one which is unlikely to have any more support for the dungeon mechanic they are doing there. So if you happen to enjoy one of them continuing to build on it will be easy.

  1. Elven Empire

  2. Reap the Tide

  3. Symbiotic Swarm

I actually bought the elvish one. Playing tribal is a pretty fun, strong, and easy introduction into commander. I like Reap the Tide because Aesi, Tyrant of Gyre Strait is a strong commander. Symbiotic Swarm is a nice deck since keyword soup is an interesting option that keeps getting more cards for it.

I am a huge fan of both Mind Seize, and Adaptive Enchantments. I do in fact recommend starting out with a pre-constructed deck and then eventually expanding it, or branching out to a new deck depending on how you like to play once you figure it out. Almost all of the pre-cons are playable out of the box at many tables. All of them have tons of support online and on youtube when it comes to budget, or not so budget upgrades over time. Good luck! Welcome to the best format in Magic the Gathering. :) The proffesor at Tolarian Community College, The Command Zone, and Commander's Quarters are all excellent platforms to check out on youtube.

InfernalTusker Welcome to the club! Sounds like you made your decision, so apologies for coming in late, but I'd like to expand on the question of what you like to play with some other questions and maybe suggest your future in Magic. Think about these not just in terms of Magic, but for other media as well--video games, movies, books, whatever.

Do you enjoy tense defensive standoffs, or do you prefer dynamic action?

Which of the following do you think is the most effective way to fight? Infiltration and sabotage, a well-organized group showing mutual reinforcement, or brutal hack-n-slash?

Is it most important to be trusted, feared, or ignored, if you're trying to win?

Is it best to protect yourself, develop a strong base of resources, make allies and support each other, or aggressively bring down your opposition?

All of these have a certain type of Commander deck or strategy, so thinking about these questions may help nudge you toward one playstyle or another

I may be biased but elven empire would be a good place to start. Elves are easy and fun to play. Easy to upgrade. And that deck has a lot of good cards for elves. But then I love elves

Lathril Elves gives you a great starting point for a BRUTAL elfball deck.
