EDH Under $1 Series - Revamp (Help)

Commander (EDH) forum

So I've decided to begin my series of budget commander decks again from scratch, but this time I'll try to keep them as updated and current as possible, as well as actually making them as good as I possibly can with price restrictions in mind. I'm also planning to playtest each of them extensively, either on Tappedout or Untap.in, and once they've been tuned I will buy them in paper to have the true experience.

So basically, I need suggestions for commanders to start it off! I've looked at lots already, and have some in mind, but I'd really appreciate some from you guys. Here's a link to Scryfall that shows all legendary creatures currently under $1. (amazing site for finding cards by the way.) Link

Hey, here's some Commanders from the Scryfall list and cards that are $1 or less that are good with the Commander:

Just going by Scryfall (even going as deep as <0.90c in terms of value rather than the full dollar) there are quite a few that spring up that I'd be interested in seeing made on such an extreme budget:

Rashmi, Eternities Crafter -- Simic Control/Tempo is something I'd be super interested to see on a budget, not gonna lie.

Tasigur, the Golden Fang -- Recursive politics on a budget?

Kefnet the Mindful -- You could easily do Mystic Sanctuary loops here, there are a couple of spells that require you to bounce a land to cast, like Deprive and Tragic Lesson.

Oviya Pashiri, Sage Lifecrafter -- Only because I have a budget plan for her myself, I'd be interested in seeing another take on it!

Darigaaz Reincarnated -- This is more of a pet idea for me, I love Darigaaz.

Rosheen Meanderer/Hallar, the Firefletcher -- Both are kind of unique in Gruul colours so it'd be interesting to see either made on a budget.

Sachi, Daughter of Seshiro -- If you're looking for a tribal commander, Shamans are a very unique tribe.

Those are just some that spring to mind for me looking over the list, whether you run with any of them or not I hope you enjoy the process of budgeteering! I know I do whenever I get the itch!

Yennet, Cryptic Sovereign could be fun, freecasting huge things for free as long as they're odd

It'll be more applicable when commander legends is released, but it would be interesting to see a working 4 color/partners deck on a budget

Unlife - I agree about Yennet, it would be really cool! Do you know when the spoilers for Commander Legends are coming out? I would really like to do some more partner decks!

When it comes to budget.....

Mairsil, the Pretender is one of my favorite decks. Nikya of the Old Ways can be cast on t3 to drop massive eldrazi(that are fairly cheap in $$) on t4. My little brother does this.

If you want help with Mairsil, lemme know -- it's not an easy deck. It's entirely combo and half the deck is designed to go off almost immediately when you cast Mary.

Snake_OilmultimediaTriusMalarky Thank you guys so much for all the suggestions! I really like all of them, and I'll add them to the list! I would like help with Mairsil down the road, but it'll probably be a loooong time.

Alright, I used a random selector and got Pako, Arcane Retriever! So he and Haldan, Avid Arcanist will be the first new EDH Under $1 commanders! I'll be selecting commanders randomly, new ones can be added to the list at any time.

So.... T/O believes that Pako and Haldan are $12 and $6, respectively. But TCGplayer thinks otherwise. Just interesting.

It is interesting, yeah, hopefully they're actually under a dollar, but TCGPlayer says they are so oh well!

So, a big reason I'm not a fan of building budget decks is that there's a huge influx of commander players and with that comes diminished supply. Granted, with reprints and the ungodly amount of the same product with premium and semi-premium counterparts makes the market relatively stable but the standout cards from a set playable across multiple formats always maintain a premium.

TLDR: Budget decks are fun but become quickly dated and a hassle to maintain due to Magics' economy.

Benthehen333: I love budget articles, however alot of them are missing an upgrade section which I think could be a nice touch. Just a little blurb to point out some nice non budget (but not exorbitant) upgrades for future improvement.

RNR_Gaming: Budget articles I find are good base points, even if outdated. They can provide ideas and inspiration for those searching for just that. And while yes the Mtg economy is ever shifting most articles make a note of the "price at time of writing" so maintenance is not required per say, but I mean if one has the time I suppose.

Mj3913 - I did actually have an upgrades section on the old EDH Under $1 decks, and I was planning on bringing it back, thanks for the reminder!

RNR_Gaming I see your point, and it's true, but even if the cards in the deck rise in price after the making of it, it usually isn't a significant difference in price anyway, so it should still be budget, and the player can add or remove cards as they wish anyway.

At the end of the day you just gotta build what makes you happy.
