Worth it or not?

Commander Deck Help forum

Hi, I'd like to point out before anyone start to read that this deck is a casual game at an Lgs type of deck. No need to have mega super combo looping everyone dies on turn 3 thing. Thanks!

I'm planning on building an Atla Palani, Nest Tender and I'd like a few pointers.

First point of order_: The direction of the deck.

  1. I was thinking that a simple way of playing her would simply be a populate the eggs and use shapeshifters and play huge creature like Zacama, Primal Calamity , any huge Eldrazi like Void Winnower and Ulamog/Kosilek/Emmrakul, Blightsteel Colossus , you know friend making stuff.

  2. Eldrazi tribal. It seemed like a nice general for cheating big Eldrazi into play but at the same time I'm not sure how I feel since she doesn't cast them and I would lose some good ''When this card is cast'' effect but I love the arts on these creatures.

  3. Tribal Dino. I love playing Dinosaurs and she look like a sun warrior from Ixalan which was one of my favorite (and first) set I've ever played in mtg at an LGS. Again using cards like Zacama or other elder Dino with her ability seems very awesome and flavor full in a way. I'd still play one or two none tribal cards in there (5 max) to really get the most out of her but I'm not sure if tribal is the way to go here.

I'd like to know what people think and why on this topic.

Second point of order : Are these cards worth it or not.

I have these cards that I'd love to play in the deck but I don't wanna hurt the tempo and consistency of the deck.

Grand Abolisher and Dragonlord Dromoka I like them for their protection during my turn so I can do my stuff without worrying or being bothered.

Expedition Map Is it really worth it in a deck that has access to green and other ramp cards?

Reliquary Tower I've been told that this card should be in every deck but I'm not sure to see the point of having it in my deck.

Fabled Passage Again same thing as reliquary tower but is it really worth it?

Throne of the High City The monarch mechanics seems really fun but is it worth it to use this or should I go for a better land instead ? Maybe I could use another ''You become the Monarch'' effect like a Palace Jailer ?

Urza's Power Plant , Urza's Mine , Urza's Tower . Is the worth it in a deck with many high cmc cards? Is the work to assemble them worth it in the deck ? Other than Expedition Map is there any other cards to help me fetch them out?

Thanks for taking your time to help with this, really appreciate it. Happy 2020 everyone

If your just using this for casual games at your lgs I'd stay away from the more broken eldrazi and prob go with dino tribal. I would not recommend the tron lands unless your deck has a ton of colorless stuff to make them really worth it.

Reliquary tower is only good if you plan on drawing a lot of cards. If you have fabled passage use it otherwise dont spend the $20 on it. Evolving Wilds Naya Panorama are good enough replacements for it.

I'd say use the dragon but stay away from the abolisher

I think the best way to play Atla is not to lock yourself into a creature type but to play the best Naya creatures you have. Some dinos, some eldrazi, a Godsire if you have one, etc. Atla definitely has dino flavor to her but she doesn't support any particular tribe. You'll be happier with a tuned but not competitive deck in general too.

I would normally say Abolisher over Dromoka but for Atla I think pulling a Dromoka out of an egg is a much better pay off.

Expedition Map isn't needed unless you have a very specific land you want to pull out like Gaea's Cradle . You don't so skip this one.

I like Reliquary Tower and think every deck should be drawing enough cards to where you will discard cards. It can be nice to have but I wouldn't put it in every deck. If you find yourself discarding a lot put it in later if at all.

Fabled Passage is great if you have one. If you don't skip it. Grab Evolving Wilds , Terramorphic Expanse , and maybe even Naya Panorama . Having your colors is important.

Monarchy is a lot of fun. Throne of the High City always seemed like a high price to get the effect. I only really like it when I'm running Queen Marchesa .

You will pretty much never get the urza lands into play together. The number of cards you need to use to get all three consistently just isn't worth it to me outside of a land based deck like Lord Windgrace

Some cards I do recommend for Atla are Nesting Dragon , Goblin Bombardment , Thornbite Staff , Ashnod's Altar , and Seedborn Muse . Though if you want to avoid infinite do not include Thornbite Staff.

The two ways you can build a casual EDH deck are A: Play a handful of very broken cards/combos to enable jank and B: Play a pile of generically good, interactive magic cards. Dinos should probably look more like the former, while the Blightsteel/Eldrazi plan is going to lead to the latter. Case in point, right now I'm building Satyr tribal. Cheap creatures aren't great, but with Aluren , it's not so hard to go off. I'm not exactly sure how that would look for a dino deck, since most people choose Gishath, Sun's Avatar , but I can tell you that activating Mirror Entity 's ability for X=0, turning all your creatures into 0/0 "Eggs" is gas.

One good interaction with Atla's ability are tutors that put creatures on the top of your library. If your budget allows it, I'd suggest Brutalizer Exarch , Conduit of Ruin , Sylvan Tutor , Worldly Tutor , Congregation at Dawn , Forerunner of the Empire (in case you run dinos), Mwonvuli Beast Tracker (situational). Pick and choose the ones that fit your deck better, if any.

triproberts12 this is what I get for not reading cards... I had forgotten that mirror entity gives creatures all creature types. That is just stupid powerful with Atla. You could also do x=1 in response to a board wipe. My mind has been blown.

The other one is Shields of Velis Vel . Can't sac your board, but can turn bad blocks or a wrath around.

None of the cards you mentioned in the second point seem important to this deck's mechanic from my point of view. I would concentrate on your first point and focus the build on your choice of beaters.

Cards I would include: - Rukh Egg and Dragon Egg for obvious reasons

Hope this inspires you, looking forward to see the decklist you come up with!
