Muldrotha Zombristocrats Brew

Commander Deck Help forum

Hello everyone, this will be my first attempt at constructing a Commander deck and I'm going to need some help creating a functioning deck. Just looking for some casual fun with friends so tier 1 performance is not necessary, but I would love some tricks to impress my pals. I know there are some impressive Muldrotha, the Gravetide brews in the works, but I'm working within a tight budget. Who knows, if a suggestion is truly worth the cost, I might fork over some extra cash. First and foremost, my idea is to build an aristocrats deck using cards like Dictate of Erebos, Grave Pact, and Butcher of Malakir. I believe the most effective (and fun) way to get my aristocrats running is to use sacrifice outlets such as Grimgrin, Corpse-Born, Ashnod's Altar, and Fleshbag Marauder. I also plan to use recursion cards like Muldrotha, the Gravetide, Gisa and Geralf, and Havengul Lich for extra sacrifice fun. Zombies like are my preferred creature type because they seem to be the easiest creatures to recur. (Prized Amalgam, Gravecrawler, and Relentless Dead.) Since Muldrotha, the Gravetide can recast permanents like Animate Dead and Pernicious Deed, I'm avoiding instants or sorceries unless they are too good to pass up. I'm thinking Epiphany at the Drownyard, Villainous Wealth, and Traumatize could be interesting inclusions. Maybe Army of the Damned for tons of sacrifice targets. Is there any hope of pulling this deck together into a functioning strategy?

It looks like you have a good general strategy going on! Muldrotha is a strong general that will draw a lot of hate, so be prepared to protect her.

Merciless Executioner and Slum Reaper are not zombies, but act as functional replacements for Fleshbag.

Lion's Eye Diamond is a great (but expensive) way to drop your hand in the yard, and it allows you to consistently do it. Damia, Sage of Stone and Ghirapur Orrery let you pick up a new hand each turn as well.

Green has some crazy recurring ramp such as Burgeoning, Yavimaya Elder, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Khalni Heart Expedition, The Gitrog Monster, Perilous Forays, and even blue gets in on it with Mind Over Matter.

Hopefully that gives you the toolbox you need to go crazy!! Best of luck!

I think I would stay away from the instant/sorceries you mentioned in favor of permanents that give you more creatures, for example Necromancer's Stockpile or Zombie Infestation since they both add to your graveyard and give tokens

Lot of cards out there that fill the yard and give you a card to accelerate your plans like Mulch, Vessel of Nascency, Grisly Salvage, Satyr Wayfinder, Scout the Borders, Gather the Pack, Tracker's Instincts, Benefaction of Rhonas, Jarad's Orders, Mental Note, Thought Scour, Strategic Planning, Champion of Wits -also a zombie, dredge cards are especially good for accelerating this strategy.

Wow, that's a lot of great feedback. Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I'm not going to lie though, I have very limited experience in constructing decks of any kind. Right now I'm looking at the pile of potential cards not knowing what to add, what to cut, and how big of a mana base this deck needs. How many cards like Burgeoning and Perilous Forays do I need? And how much should I thin my lands because of this? Does the fact that Muldrotha, the Gravetide can recur important permanents mean I should worry less about consistency? I'm also trying to stay casual with the deck's power level, and I'm not sure how much power is too much power. I'm an avid follower of Magic video content like The Command Zone and Strictly Better MTG so I know being in Blue allows for staples like Cyclonic Rift, but it may be overkill for a group of friends, most of whom have equal to no knowledge of the format. Plus I'm not much of a Spike or Timmy, I want this deck to be pure Johnny jank. Thinking of including Mechanized Production and Revel in Riches as a middle finger to my opponents. From a noob to the community, where do I start?

Just going to throw a bunch of cards onto what can loosely be called a "deck list" so the thread has a solid point of reference. Posting soon.
