How to utilize Humility?

Commander Deck Help forum

Hey fellas, I’m working on a commander deck and I’m juggling a couple of ideas. I’m starting with a 1/1 base power and toughness idea that would bounce Humility in and out of play to allow a single creature to breakthrough while opponents creatures are limited in scope with Meekstone, Crawlspace, Ghostly Prison, stuff like that.

I’m new to Humility and really want to open my head to ideas on how to use it and bounce it. Any thoughts ?

I use it in a superfriends deck to great effect. Such as transforming my own 1/1 with Oko into a 3/3 elk.

Outside superfriends, I would say your best options are making a bunch of 1/1 tokens then using anthems to buff them. White has a ton of good generic anthems. You can also use enchantments, equipment, and/or +1 counters to get the competitive edge. Grab a vigilance anthem to go along with that and you'll be near invulnerable with humility in play.

I would recommend black in the deck if you need humility for the extra non-white tutors. Otherwise blue would also help with counters. There are quite a few enchantment recovery cards in white, but green have some as well if it gets blown up.

The other option is to put it in a strategy that doesn't care about creatures. Eggs, enchantress, spellslinger, noncreature combo... they all get hurt a little from losing creature based engines, but since you are building your deck around it, and you control when it gets played, you can be ready for it when no one else is.

I think that Shorikai, Genesis Engine is generally seen as one of the better commanders to have when running Humility as part of the 99. Since it is just an artifact until it is crewed it is unaffected by Humility. The tokens that Shorikai produces also help you to pull ahead under Humility's effect.

Blue/White is a good pairing for bounce effects and it gives you Idyllic Tutor, Enlightened Tutor, and Long-Term Plans as ways to tutor Humility up. The Isochron Scepter + Dramatic Reversal combo lets you dig through as much of your library as you want with Shorikai but the Scepter can also just have something like Boomerang imprinted onto it as a way to keep bouncing Humility back to hand as need be. You can also bounce the Scepter itself back to your hand if you draw into Dramatic Reversal later and want to go for the combo instead.

Unwinding Clock is worth considering for the value it can net with your commander and any other artifacts that tap. Meticulous Excavation is a bit limited and mana intensive in its use but is a repeatable way to return Humility to hand. Venser, the Sojourner can exile Humility for the duration of your turn and then bring it back in time for your opponents to enjoy on their turns.
