MODERN HORIZONS/CORE SET 2020 UPDATE —July 22, 2019

Hello! Sorry everybody for the lack of an update as I've been extremely busy and don't get as much of a chance to play Commander as often. However, still constantly looking to make updates for the deck. Another cool thing is we're approaching 20k views and getting close to being the top Ur-Dragon deck so thanks for the support! From these past two sets, there wasn't a whole ton of new stuff to add but definetely had some interesting cards that could go in depending on what your looking for. After some consideration, I only choose the best ones to make the cut. Hopefully Commander 2019 coming out next month brings some cool stuff for Ur-Dragon.

I'll be looking to update the primer in the near future with decision of all inclusions and exclusions. Something else that's going to be happening soon is some alternate art proxies I ordered as well as some alters that I'll start working on getting for deck as well as Mythic Edition cards to acquire so I'll be sure to share whenever any of them come in.

Sarkhan Unbroken > Sarkhan Unbroken

  • Will eventually pick up a Nicol Bolas but very happy with this new art.

Kolaghan, the Storm's Fury > Thunderbreak Regent

  • Again, this card has let me down. I'm such a fan of the art style and what not but the effect just isn't relevant enough for Commander to make an impact for the spot. Kolaghan isn't exactly the best dragon for every situation for a 4 mana 4/5 with that ability isn't too shabby for right now.

Smothering Tithe > Sarkhan, Dragonsoul

  • Unfortunately, Sarkhan is the biggest and slowest card I noticed when I was making cuts. If there's a constant small token problem, he's really good but just running him for relying on the ultimate for a non-superfriends deck just wasn't good enough. Bringing in Smothering Tithe because after playing this card in my Atraxa deck, the ramp it brings is insane and exactly what a big mana dragon deck would want for 4 mana.

Drakuseth, Maw of Flames > Darigaaz Reincarnated

  • Core Sets always know how to bring in a bunch of cool dragons. This guy is a beefy and better Glorybringer being able to hit 3 different targets for removal and has a great body for 6 mana. Giving him haste too can potentially kill people out of nowhere. But with bringing in a big dragon, another has to leave the deck and Darigeez was the only option. While he does a good job of being a fast beater and can recur himself, he was the worst dragon out of the top end of the curve.

Vlasiax It's been going fine for me. I have a lot less 7 power creatures than I used to so Frontier Siege might make it's way back in but hitting planeswalkers with the ability seems good.

Chrisnoants Out of those Descendant's Path is probably the cheapest and most efficient and doesn't walk me into a 3 for 1 if I don't get a chance to swing. With my deckbuilding, the goal was to make it to where cards that I topdecked would be as impactful as possible. Sure, Scroll Rack and Sensei's are good cards and good for early on. But if I don't have them then, I don't want them later in the game. So speed and resiliency is the name of the game.

chiri That interaction never occurred to me but yes I hope to be able to do it at one point :)

Niemandswasser Thanks! In terms of single targeted destruction, deck is usually pretty resilient as my opponents don't know what colors I need for my deck at any point. Now mass non basic land hate is pretty shitty. There are some rocks to fix it but with how crazy the color requirements are, there's not a whole lot to do about it. If they have it, they have it. If it's a problematic thing that you're getting Blood Moon or something by a person, just kill them first always :) and it's justified because at any point they could drop one of those effects are you're out of the game.

Hmm, I think that this deck is too slow and 5 CMC slot if you correctly calculate the CMC of Dragons is too crowded. I'd recommend adding some interaction, ramp and draw in CMC 1-3 instead of higher because those small effects early put you way ahead than you might think and later are very helpful without taking the whole turn. Like Assassin's Trophy for Windgrace's Judgement or Rhystic Study / Mystic Remora for Kindred Discovery kind of thing. Tutors might also be a thing but that depends on how much money you want to invest.

Also I've tested Thunderbreak Regent and it's not that good. Most of the time you get 3 or 6 damage MAX not even mentioning the huge amount of boardwipes, which don't target so you don't have a chance to trigger it at all.

About planewalkers - I've tried more 'low to the ground' CMC version where there's only one PW: Sarkhan the Mad . Others were very tough to remove because "Dragons, man" and things like that but now that I've got the courage to do this (probably blasphemous) thing I don't miss them at all.

Guardian Project is much better than Kindred Discovery . Comes down a turn sooner and triggers off of your non-dragons.

Ignore my previous comment. I forgot that Kindred triggers off of attacks as well. Maybe as a secondary inclusion if you need more card draw?

I assume you've considered the Worldgorger Dragon + Animate Dead combo? I run a legendary dragon tribal Ur-Dragon myself, and as an absolute backup plan I run the Worldgorger combo to power Kamahl's Druidic Vow to play the whole deck at once. Would it be worth considering here?

What about the new card Morophon, the Boundless ? Maybe use it together with Fist of Suns and Jodah, Archmage Eternal , to give more advantage to play dragons with mana costs reduced, and swing with all of they with +1/+1. Being a changeling, Morophon's cost is actually 6, so you can bring to the field easily. By the way, I'm so glad to see someone making Dragons Commander so greatfull, because I am such a dragonfag :v and, obviously, your fan by now

Just wondering if you would reconsider on Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund since he costs . Instead maybe add Dragonlord Kolaghan since he only costs . I know that you talk about why he's not in here (his second ability) but his first ability is good enough to excuse running him if only for that. Plus your opponents could be playing a Rat Colony or Persistent Petitioners deck which would mean that his second ability would do serious work. I personally think that Karthus' possible downside is enough of an excuse to not run him but maybe that's just me.

Cuickbrownfox1, Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund is fine to use because you can pick up dragons from other players to make a massive swing against somebody. Of course, it depends the decks of the other players, but it's the same when we talk about the second ability of Dragonlord Kolaghan . Very situational for both cases, but to compare other conditions, you may consider that the Kaarthus has a larger body, and even if it costs more, your mana base bends to Jund, so it's not necessarially a problem (talking about this deck). But yes, you have a good argument. I only consider the playgroup in a generic way, since I usually avoid changing the deck a lot and I hardly see decks as Rat Colony for a long time
