Mysterious Opportunity —March 25, 2020

The Mystery Boosters provide some sweet reprints, including a card that was on my wish list for this deck: Selvala, Heart of the Wilds. That made me reconsider some other cards as well. Moved away Nyxbloom Ancient as I find it more at home in another deck. Switched out Vivien Reid for a cheaper removal option: Qasali Pridemage. And since I've finally acquired a foil version for my bling project, I might just run my regular cradle in this list soon...

Hope this is cool, when I found this deck I playtested it a bit against some of my other EDH decks. Kudos on building something that felt really creative and unique, while being really powerful. My sidisi deck had a gross board and was poised to win, but the Samut deck used Aurelia to get a second combat phase and multiple yisan activations, bringing out combat celebrant and Odric, and in the third combat phase of the turn sent an army of flying double-strikers over everything to knock out two players. Super fun to pilot and really explosive, great job ~

Wow orderofthephenax! That’s probably the coolest feedback I’ve had on any deck, at least for a long time :). Thanks a lot!! I’m currently in the process of acquiring the missing cards I need for the deck Looking forward to that first game!

Any decks you want me to have a look at to give you some feedback on?

Cheers!

Nice! Glad to see another person who appreciates a good Samut deck.

A possible alternative to Dragon Mage that might be worth considering is Knollspine Dragon . Needing to bring Knollspine in after combat is, admittedly, a little awkward at times but it usually lets you draw more cards in one go than Dragon Mage does and it doesn't give your opponents fresh full hands.

Shalai, Voice of Plenty is cheap to buy and has worked out great for me, especially since you can tutor for her with Sisay.

If you aren't able to get your hands on a Sword of Feast and Famine to combo with your Aggravated Assault, Nature's Will is a more affordable alternative option.

It makes me smile to see that you also run the Intrepid Hero + Kessig Wolf Run tech. I've caught people completely off guard with that.

Hey SaberTech, thanks for the comment and the upvote!

I like your tips! I did come across Knollspine Dragon before. Will put that on my list to consider. Shalai, Voice of Plenty is a great option indeed for protection. I'm now running Gaddock Teeg as a similar card, but they are quite complementary in what they defend from. Will also consider that one.

I have a Sword of Feast and Famine and I agree it fits the deck very well. However, I like it that this deck is not running any super expensive staples yet outside of the lands, so I'm going to start with the current setup and see from there. Nature's Will might make the cut in its stead, but I'll have to give it some thought.

I actually wasn't aware yet of that synergy between Kessig Wolf Run and intrepid hero. Sweet tech :).

Thanks for all the great tips!

I've played games where I've had Shalai, Gaddock Teeg, and Mother of Runes all out on the board at the same time. It gives my opponents headaches to try to crack through that. Since cards like Infest don't get played that often in EDH, usually what you have to watch out for the most is an overloaded Cyclonic Rift or a Toxic Deluge.

Yavimaya Hollow is pretty expensive, but it is a good inclusion if you can get your hands on it because it is legendary so Sisay can tutor for it. I've often used Sisay to get Shalai and the Hollow at the same time so that I have a way to protect Shalai the turn she comes down.

Just wanted to say that I've been working on my Samut build and I've taken a lot of inspiration from your build and it's really helped improve my deck.
