Have you considered Gush. Super powerful and has a relatively high CMC.

Also, why the one-off Firebolt? It's a good card, no doubt, but seems a bit out of place. Maybe swap for Magma Jet instead? Same Shock-effect, but helps Scry on top of that.

Either way; spicy brew, my friend.

Does anyone play Book Burning in Pauper? I have only dabbled in the format but I used to run this card back in the day and loved it.

Chasmolinker, Book Burning is cool, but most times it is a worse Tome Scour in a color that does not even have Tome Scour; and it certainly does not do much in this deck, but glad you like it!

Fair point. I saw the artwork for erratic explosion and for some reason Book Burning popped in my head.

Any reason you're running Fireblast over Shard Volley? I know Fireblast hits for 4 but is the extra point of damage worth pitching two mountains?

Chasmolinker - There is a reason, and it is that fireblast hits for 6 off Erratic Explosion and Riddle of Lightning, compared to the Volley, which hits for one off of them. For that reason, I do not run Lightning Bolt, but Staggershock instead.

Boza: Again, you've got a very solid deck here, already. I'm only gonna have some experimental options for you, but you might like some of them. =)

I was going to suggest trying an Owl (Augury Owl/Spire Owl) instead of the Augur of Bolas, but, idk. The AoB digs just as deep and puts something in your hand. The Owls would dig into the top of your deck and help set it up for combos with Erratic Explosion. It comes down to seeing what you need more of in the deck. How does the deck run? Does the deck have a specific weakness it needs improving?

Beyond that, I only suggest that you replace the Guildgates with the lifeland, Swiftwater Cliffs, because they both enter tapped, and gaining one life is better than not gaining one life.

lol, I should probably ask you to look at my decks and help optimize them XD

Gattison, it would be a pleasure :)

Otherwise, yes, you have correctly recognized Augur of Bolas as the worst card in the deck. I want a defensive early creature to help stave off aggro and have wandered between Augur and Sea Gate Oracle, but the owl suggestion leads me to believe that Omenspeaker is the best choice for that slot.

+1...I think you need more Scry effects to help set up your draws. I second Gattison suggestion of Augury Owl as a better option than Augur of bolas. Digging three deep is huge for this deck.

also, consider adding: Halimar Depths to your mana base.

How about Faerie Seer for some high-quality/high-value topdeck manipulation/utility? I can easily see it replacing Omenspeaker; it's almost strictly better. Sage of Epityr might also be nice, as could See Beyond, and potentially even 1 or 2 copies of Feldon's Cane, though that one is a bit more of a risk. +1 For the deck, btw.

Oh, and if you'd like to go really deep, what about Memory Sluice or Cathartic Adept?

Mental Note, Merrow Witsniper, Merfolk Secretkeeper, Thought Scour, you name it. Sorry for the spam, just trying to help optimize the deck (even though my suggestions may not, in fact, help you do so because I don't necessarily know much about deckbuilding in this lane/whatever it is that I'm talking about)

:)

channelfireball12345 - some of these suggestions have been considered:

  • Faerie Seer is worse than omenspeaker in this deck. The 1/3 body is much more useful at protecting early game than the 1 mana discount.
  • sage of epityr does nothing if the top 4 cards are bad and I prefer it in the form of a land Halimar Depths, see beyond is a sorcery that offers neither selection nor card advantage, while feldon's cane is useful, but actually recasting those big spells will never be necessary.
  • all the cards that mill the top of my deck actively work against scry and brainstorm.
  • index is card disadvantage that is generally worse than Halimar Depths

The deck has exactly 5 flexslots - the two Omenspeakers and two omens of the sea and cutting down to 19 lands. I do not think there is a card currently in pauper better for those slots.
