MID Tuning —Sept. 20, 2021

Honestly, while Midnight Hunt was a great set, there’s isn’t a whole lot in it for our food deck here. Still, there are some nice updates here.

OUT >>> IN:

  1. Mortality Spear >>> Abrupt Decay - Mortality Spear is a cute card that was on theme for the deck. It was also a pain in the butt to play with. Often, sacrificing a food just to reduce its cost was not worth it… and surprisingly, the Lifegain clause is all around difficult to work with. Abrupt Decay is certainly more narrow, but a LOT more consistent.

  2. Deathsprout >>> Deadly Rollick - In speaking of overcosted, Deathsprout is a card that I do like… but it is difficult to play with. Yes, the ramp was useful… but it’s not likely worth it to skip a whole turn just to remove something/ramp a little. Deadly Rollick should be a solid card that will usually be free.

  3. Costly Plunder >>> Deadly Dispute - Pretty much a strict upgrade. I updated this a while ago, but I don’t think I mentioned it yet.

  4. Tainted Wood >>> Windswept Heath - Conditional land into a strong fetch. This makes Tireless Provisioner happy, as well as a few others. Pretty simple upgrade. The only downside is that I can't crack the same dirty joke anymore.

  5. Nature's Lore >>> Earthcraft - I found myself with an extra copy of Earthcraft. Playtests have been predictably crazy. Cards like Cauldron Familiar, Bloodghast, and so on, make this card nutty. Worst case? I can tap the creature for the mana I need to use Gyome's ability to save it.

  6. Foreboding Fruit >>> Growing Rites of Itlimoc  Flip - The flavor of the fruit does not make up for the fact it’s a bad card. Or, I suppose it is more appropriate to say, the flavor of it isn’t strong enough (whereas Bake into a Pie will likely never leave this deck). Growing Rites seems like a suitable card to test. Although, it does make me want to play with Seedborn Muse or Winding Canyon… I suppose we’ll have to see how it pans out.

And that’s it for now. Note, from Midnight Hunt, I am eying Outland Liberator  Flip, Augur of Autumn, and Hostile Hostel  Flip. I just like the Hostel because… flavor. Until next update. Cheers!
