Ayula, Queen Among Bears Combo?

Asked by Wyrbak 3 years ago

I have an Ayula, Queen Among Bears and a Garruk's Uprising in play. If a bear token from Words of Wilding comes into play, can I put the +1/+1 counters on the token and draw a card?

It does not because the bear will still enter as a 2/2. Ayula, Queen Among Bears says "Whenever another Bear enters the battlefield under your control... put two +1/+1 counter on target bear.' The creature would enter as a 2/2. Because it is a 2/2, Garruk's Uprising won't even trigger because the creature would have to enter as a 4/4. Even if you choose to give the bear the counters, the counters would be placed on the bear after it had entered the battlefield. To get the effect you are looking for, you would have to have something like two Metallic Mimics on the battlefield at the same time. Notice the wording on the mimic: "Each other creature you control of the chosen type enters the battlefield with an additional +1/+1 counter on it." Because this specifies that the creature enters the battle with a counter (as opposed to gaining the counters after it entered) it would have increased power and toughness as it enters, and Garruk's Uprising would trigger.

For the ability to work the way you're hoping, it would have to read "Whenever a creature enters the battlefield under your control, draw a card if it has 4 power or greater." This ability would trigger on small creatures and give you a chance to buff them to get the bonus.

As TheRealSpecialK says, the trigger on Garruk's Uprising looks for 4+ power creatures coming into play, so a 2/2 won't qualify no matter how big you can make it immediately after.
