What happens when I sac Gilded Drake in response to using his effect?

If I sac Gilded Drake in response to selecting a target to switch control with, do I still get to gain control of their stuff after he dies to pay for another spell?

You cannot exchange two objects if one of them doesn't exist anymore. So in both of the cases the triggered abilities wouldn't be able to do anything because you could not exchange the objects if the creature had died.

701.8a A spell or ability may instruct players to exchange something (for example, life totals or control of two permanents) as part of its resolution. When such a spell or ability resolves, if the entire exchange can't be completed, no part of the exchange occurs.
