How you might guess from my name, I'm a dedicated tribal player. I like gimmicky, unusual tribal decks, and if there is something I like more, then it is brewing them.

I'm a green player at heart, though I really like playing any colours if I like the deck I can brew with them. In the last years, I tried to get into EDH, and although my experience in actual play is still quite small, I've become pretty ok in deckbuilding.

Here's a link to my EDH-decks:

After going for "budget perfection" for the most time, I lately realized how awesome games of Magic can be if your deck isn't aimed at perfection, so I started building some decks with intentional weaknesses. And I can tell you: It's a blast.

If you have seen which set I started with, you know I've been around in this game for quite some time, but I'm still a kitchen table guy, and only if it's because my priorities aren't set on tournaments.

Feel free to take a look at my decks, and if you encounter or even have some weird (tribal) lists, please show me. I'll see if I can give some suggestion or appreciation of your creativity.

Remember the Titan cycle? Start a new one in mono-colored, but make them do something unusual for their respective colors.

It's too late to edit, but Nahiri is obviously a Kor, not a human.

June 10, 2024 1:23 a.m.

Nahiri, Stoneforge Apprentice

Legendary Creature - Human Artificer

When ~ enters the battlefield, you may search your library for a colorless nonland card, reveal it and put it into your hand, then shuffle.

At the beginning of your end step, if you control a colorless permanent with mana value 6 or greater, exile ~, then return her to the battlefield transformed.

1/2

Nahiri, Loyal Heart's Fury

Legendary Planeswalker - Nahiri (CI:RW)

+1 Create a 1/1 white Kor creature token. You may attach an equipment you control to it.

-2 You may put an Equipment card from your hand or graveyard onto the battlefield. If you do, exile up to one target permanent until that card leaves the battlefield.

-7 Search your library for a colorless permanent card, put it onto the battlefield, then shuffle. It gains haste. Return it to your hand at the beginning of the next end step.

That's obviously objectively correct. She's not an enabler, she's a payoff. But what she does by this is she basically unlocks a truckload of defensive effects that mostly couldn't be used at all without her helming the deck. The closest comparison for the strategy could be Rhoda, Geist Avenger and Timin, Youthful Geist. Timin taps down things and Rhoda benefits from it, but the pair is rather weak compared to Hylda. Timin is the enabler, but he needs to be expensive manawise to not be restrictive.

Let's imagine Hylda had an Opposition effect on herself. Her triggered ability had to be a lot weaker so she couldn't go "pseudo infinite" with herself, and then the deck would be very different. You'd propably play a go-wide strategy relying on Hylda to make room for big attacks. That's not a defensive play style.

This is quite a long comment already. The most important part is this:

What she does is she unlocks a truckload of defensive effects that mostly couldn't be used at all without her payoff ability. That way, while her ability is a payoff, her effect on the cards she plays is she enables them to be played. As such, she enables defensive play and thus definitely can be called a defensive card.

Underworld Imposter

Creature - Imp Coward

As long as ~ is in any zone but the battlefield, its power is treated as though it was 13.

Unesh, Criosphinx Sovereign is another possibility. Being blue gives great value and interaction pieces, and the commander itself gives some decent ramp. Sphinxes are a powerful tribe full of versatility and minigames.

June 8, 2024 3:16 p.m.

Skrit, Protective Experiment

Legendary Creature - Ooze Mutant Soldier

Vigilance, Haste

Training (Whenever this creature attacks with another creature with greater power, put a +1/+1 counter on this creature.)

Mentor (Whenever this creature attacks, put a +1/+1 counter on target attacking creature with lesser power.)

Create a card named Jelly Bee.

Stormfront Riders seems to be exactly what you're looking for, if only they were red or blue. You could go for any card with Revolt, rhere should at least be some in your colors.

While it might be the case cards are getting more proactive, WoTC are still releasing some great defensive tools. Hylda of the Icy Crown is a very powerful commander for defensive decks. She made many of the released stun effects usable and gives a way to turn them into a win. Seen in conjunction with stun counters, that deck is only gonna get better.

June 6, 2024 11:14 p.m.

Trace of Eriom

Legendary Creature - Elemental Avatar Dragon

Vigilance

At the beginning of combat on each opponent's turn, tap target creature they control.

I mean, finishing the cycle might be a thing you could do.

But you could also do a three-color version of Seton, Krosan Protector.

June 6, 2024 12:56 a.m.

Zurgo Voidbuster

Legendary Creature - Orc Berserker Eldrazi

Haste, Menace, Vigilance

For each color spent to cast ~, it enters with a +1/+1 counter.

When ~ enters, if no colored mana was spent to cast it, it enters with five +1/+1 counters and an Annihilator 2 counter.

Create a card that Entombs a card.

You might want to try out Murkfiend Liege and/or Drumbellower.

Have fun building this! Chiss-Goria is one of the most fun current decks I have.

Scene of the Crime is another artifact land you can play in here, btw.

May 29, 2024 12:16 a.m.

TypicalTimmy: Just saw your dredge phoenix. Love how it turned out. A recurrable Vampire Nighthawk is a card to break formats.

May 28, 2024 11:16 a.m.

Karim, Resentful Loxodon

Legendary Creature - Elephant Cleric Knight

Vigilance

Creatures you don't control attack each combat if able.

Creatures can't attack you unless their controller pays for each of those creatures.

3/5

Elephants never forget. Sometimes, they also remind everybody else.

This started as "Orthodox Loxodon", but as much as I still like that name, it doesn't quite fit the card.

Create a Golgari bird. Bonus points if it's not a zombie. Double bonus if it's not a vulture.

May 28, 2024 1:17 a.m. Edited.

Nikos, the Cryomancer

Legendary Creature - Human Wizard

Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery spell, ~ deals 1 damage to target creature or planeswalker. Tap that permanent and put a stun counter on it. As long as it remains tapped, its activated abilities can't be activated.

2/3

"They tried to teach me to burn my foes with fire. Burning worked, but I found a cooler way to do that."

Wild

May 27, 2024 11:26 p.m.

Seshiro, Orochi Ancestor

Legendary Creature - Snake Monk

Snakes you control get +1/+1 and gain reach.

: Reveal the top X cards of your library. Put all snake cards revealed this way into your hand and the rest into your graveyard. Then you may put a legendary snake creature card from your hand onto the battlefield.

3/5

This will be even cooler once all Nagas officially become snakes.

Wild

May 26, 2024 7:40 a.m. Edited.

Koth and Teyo, Hammer and Shield

Legendary Planeswalker - Koth Teyo

You and Lands you control have Hexproof.

+2 Until end of turn, whenever you tap a land for mana, add an additional .

-2 Until your next turn, creatures can't attack you or planeswalkers you control unless their controller has you draw a card for each of those creatures.

-8 You get an emblem with "Lands you control have Haste and Indestructible and are 4/4 elemental creatures in addition to their other types."

That was a lot more fun than I expected. Repeat!

Yes, she would. They pile would get exiled by Tamiyo's ability. She'll be returned as a planeswalker, and each mutation would be returned as a creature.
